Martin (Marty) Wilson
It is with deep sadness that we recently heard of the passing of Martin Wilson, known affectionately as Marty, who died peacefully on Saturday, January 4, 2025, following a short illness.
A distinguished musician, Marty served as Principal Trombone of the Ulster Orchestra since 1989, enriching Northern Ireland’s cultural landscape for over three decades.
His exceptional talent extended beyond classical music – he was also an accomplished jazz singer and served as Musical Director of the Belfast Jazz Swing Orchestra for four years, delighting audiences at numerous BJSO evenings.
Throughout his illustrious career, Marty delivered memorable performances with the Whitburn Band and the London Trombone Ensemble. His interpretation of Mahler’s Third Symphony stands as a testament to his extraordinary musicianship.
A passionate advocate for preserving musical heritage, he dedicated time to digitizing classic records and videos, sharing these treasures with a wider audience through his YouTube channel.
Away from the concert hall, Marty found joy in life’s simple pleasures – playing golf, tending to his cherished rose garden, and above all, spending time with his beloved family. His warmth, artistry, and genuine love for music touched countless lives and inspired generations of musicians.
Marty is survived by his loving wife Gillian and his sons Brian and Alan, who will forever cherish his memory.
The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at 11:30 AM at Bangor Parish Church.
